Sonia Bompastor: 'A really special moment'

Lyon head coach hails 'perfect' display

Lyon coach Sonia Bompastor said it was a "really special moment" to win the Champions League for a record eighth time after her side beat Barcelona 3-1 in Turin on Saturday.

Ada Hegerberg put Lyon ahead in the 19th minute and Catarina Macario added a second in the second half. Alexia Putellas pulled one back for Barcelona in the 89th minute but Melvine Malard made sure of the win in injury time.

"It's a really special moment," said Bompastor. "We've been working towards this for a long time and it's a great feeling to finally achieve it. We played a perfect game and we deserved to win."

Lyon dominate

Lyon dominated the game from start to finish and created a number of chances. Hegerberg had a goal ruled out for offside in the first half and Macario hit the post in the second half.

But the French side eventually got their goals and were never really threatened by Barcelona.

"We were the better team tonight," said Bompastor. "We created more chances and we played with more intensity. We knew that Barcelona were a dangerous team but we were able to control them for most of the game."

Hegerberg's return

Hegerberg's return from injury was a major boost for Lyon and the Norwegian striker was a constant threat to the Barcelona defence.

She opened the scoring with a clinical finish in the first half and was unlucky not to add to her tally in the second half.

"Ada is a world-class striker and she showed her quality tonight," said Bompastor. "She's a great addition to our team and she's going to be very important for us in the future."

Historic win

Lyon's victory was their eighth Champions League title and it moved them one clear of Barcelona in the all-time standings.

It was also their fourth title in a row and it made Bompastor the first female coach to win the competition three times.

"It's an historic win for Lyon," said Bompastor. "We're very proud to have won the Champions League for a record eighth time and we're going to enjoy this moment."
