South East High football player dies nearly two weeks after he was hurt during a game

Traumatic brain injury likely cause of death, says family

A South East High School football player has died nearly two weeks after he was hurt during a game.

The Linn County Sheriff's Office says 16-year-old Maxon Shoop suffered a traumatic brain injury during a game against North Linn High School on August 26.

Shoop was taken to Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids, where he died on Tuesday.

The Sheriff's Office is investigating the death, but says it appears to be an accident.

"Our hearts are broken for the Shoop family and the entire South East community," the school district said in a statement. "Maxon was a beloved son, brother, and friend, and he will be deeply missed."

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help the Shoop family with funeral expenses. As of Wednesday morning, the page had raised over $30,000.

Traumatic brain injuries in high school football

Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) are a serious concern in high school football.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), TBIs are the leading cause of death and disability among high school football players.

TBIs can occur when a player is hit in the head or neck, or when they fall and hit their head on the ground.

Symptoms of a TBI can include:

  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Confusion
  • Dizziness
  • Loss of consciousness

If you suspect that a player has suffered a TBI, it is important to seek medical attention immediately.

Preventing TBIs in high school football

There are a number of things that can be done to prevent TBIs in high school football, including:

  • Properly fitting helmets
  • Teaching players how to tackle safely
  • Limiting the amount of contact in practice
  • Educating players about the risks of TBIs

By following these guidelines, we can help to reduce the number of TBIs in high school football and protect our young athletes.

In memory of Maxon Shoop

Maxon Shoop was a bright and talented young man who was taken from us too soon.

He will be remembered for his infectious smile, his love of life, and his passion for football.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Shoop family and the entire South East community during this difficult time.
